I Made a Serious Error, and Now I Need to Be Rescued So I Don’t End Up Dead.

Your landlord is like a person holding the edge of a rug you stand on.

That rug can be yanked out from under you, and you will fly through the air and fall on your head.

Your landlord could do this when you are distracted by business, or unwell, or grieving, or unable to hire a costly lawyer.

In my case my life savings lost all their buying power due to runaway inflation that I did not think was even possible.

Then my landlord turned out to be a sole proprietorship (or functional equivalent) owned outright by a local dentist whose only concern was giving himself retirement income at the maximum.

Then I learned that Maryland law calls for apartment leasing to be “at will”, so my landlord can refuse to renew my lease at any moment, including 1 January 2026 when it will be icy, freezing, and very cold outside. So without shelter I will die.

The landlord, which looked like a regular company, turned out to be owned outright as a sole proprietorship. So it has no corporate restraints. No city, county, state, or federal laws apply to it if the dentist that owns it chooses to expel me on January 1 instead of renewing my lease.

I wandered into my predicament — unaware. It’s my fault. I just did not realize the power I was allowing which could utterly shatter my life.

Anyway I need a lawyer, will work for money coming from somebody else, not me, I have no money.

Then it turns out that the federal government is closed, shut down, kaput, gone, not there.

Then it turns out that the state, county, and city can’t do anything. Could I not just understand that they can’t do anything? Yes, all Potemkin, fake, just a show.

So I will soon be facing two very large police people with badges and guns who can and will throw me out in the cold about 60 days from now, and frankly, I am scared.

Now there is nobody there for me.

What is now happening to me, could happen to some other citizen.
